Education and basketball career: O’Neal attended Cole High School in San Antonio, Texas, and Louisiana State University, where he studied business. Throughout his years at Louisiana State University, while playing for Brown at LSU, O’Neal was a two-time All-American, two-time SEC player of the year, and received the Adolph Rupp Trophy as NCAA men’s basketball player of the year in 1991. O’Neal left LSU after his junior year to pursue his NBA career, but continued his education even after becoming a professional player.
In his season with the Orlando Magic, he finished in the top ten in scoring, rebounding, blocks and shooting percentage. In 1996, Shaquille signed the biggest contract in NBA history, seven years for $120 million with the LA Lakers. That same year, the U.S. Dream Team won gold at the Olympic Games in Atlanta thanks to Orlando playing in the team.
O’Neal has been named three times to the All-NBA Third Team (1994, 1996 and 1997) with two selections to the NBA Second Team (1995 and 1999). In 2000, he was named the NBA’s Most Valuable Player.
After signing a a three year $88.5 million contract extension with LA Lakers in 2000, Shaq helped deliver three consecutive world championships to the team (2000, 2001, 2002). In 2004 O’Neal moved to the Miami Heat, helping the team capture the NBA championship in 2006. At the moment he is playing for the Boston Celtics.
Outside of the basketball career: In 1990, Shaq appeared on Fu-Schnickens’ Top 40 single What’s Up Doc?. In 1993, he released his solo debut, Shaq Diesel, the album achieved platinum status. His second album in 1994 established Shaq as a gold-certified rap artist. A 1996 You Can’t Stop the Reign album was released under his own imprint, TWIsM (The World Is Mine) Records.
Besides, Shaq castes in several films including Blue Chips with Nick Nolte and the star vehicles Kazaam! and Steel, for which he also recorded the soundtrack albums.
Personal Life: By his ex-wife, Shaunie Nelson Shaq has four children and one other daughter with an ex-girlfriend of his.
Interesting facts: On January 31, 2012, O’Neal was honored as one of the 35 Greatest McDonald’s All-Americans.
O’Neal was later inducted into the Luisiana State University Hall of Fame. He became the first player in NBA history to be named Player of the Week in his first week in the league.
